Timing and composition are subtle arts that come with lots of patience and experience. But what is the one golden rule of wildlife photography that one should learn above all else?
It's all in the eyes.
Photographing wildlife is not the same as photographing a landscape or an inanimate object. Your wildlife subject has eyes, and our natural tendency as humans is to make eye contact. As a result, if you can capture the eyes effectively in a wildlife photograph, you have achieved the main ingredient of a great image.
Take a look at some of the great wildlife photography to be found in print and on the internet. You will notice that very often a picture only shows part of the animal, and perhaps much of what is visible is out of focus. The subject may be half-hidden behind a bush or lost in shadow.

For example, imagine a scene with a kangaroo and a striking tree in the background. Position yourself so the kangaroo is on the left and the tree is on the right. If you take your shot when the kangaroo is looking to the right (towards the tree), you will have created a composition that brings the two elements of the picture together. People will first notice the kangaroo, then follow its gaze to take a better look at the tree.
This is a great method of creating structure in your composition, but it also adds a little bit of pressure on you to get it right.
Two simple tips can help you make the most of the impact of the eyes in your wildlife photo. When you start your own photography business, you will need certain equipment. A good digital camera is obvious. I suggest that if you do not already own a good DSLR, (Digital Single Lens Reflex) camera, than you should look at the option to purchase one as soon as possible. If you are not fully aware of the benefits of a DSLR let me do a quick summary. The first, and some believe the most important feature, is that you look through the viewfinder and you see exactly what the camera sees. In other words, the light from the subject enters the lens of the camera, and this is the image you see. At the moment of the exposure, when you take the photo, the camera re-directs this image onto the digital sensor, and captures the image. In normal daylight, this happens so quickly, it is barely noticeable. In dim light conditions, you will not be able to see through the camera until the exposure is finished.
As a result of being able to see the subject through the lens, just as the camera does, you can take advantage of other features if the camera manufacturer has built it into the camera body. One such feature is Depth of Field preview. When you look through the camera at the subject, you can clearly see the subject because the camera uses the maximum aperture available to see the subject, and therefore, you can see if the subject is in focus or not. In other words, the lens lets the maximum amount of light into the camera so you can see the subject clearly. However, if the camera has a Depth of Field preview, you can invoke this function and the lens will Stop Down to the aperture that the lens will be at when the photo is taken and recorded. By doing this, you will be able to see exactly what areas of the image, in front of and behind the subject, will also be in focus. The image may be a little more difficult to see as there will now be less light coming through the lens, but it is a great way to see what will be in focus when you take the photo.
When taking portraits though, you will usually not want the foreground or the background to be in focus, as this can result in an image where the subject is not clearly delineated from the background. To take a successful portrait, the usual method is to use the maximum aperture available, and adjust the shutter speed to get a correct exposure. If you are going to use a flash to provide fill light for the subject, then of course, the maximum shutter speed will be limited to the maximum flash synch speed, and you will have to use the required aperture to achieve a good exposure. These are the types of compromises one has to consider when taking photos.
Before you even take the first picture, you need to set the camera to the correct format and resolution. With compact, all in one cameras, you often do not have a lot of options. Most will allow you to take photos at low, medium or high resolution, but will not allow you to make little if any, other selections. On a DSLR camera, you will often have a large number of options available. However, in my experience, I believe there is really only one option, and that is to take every image in the RAW format and at the highest resolution available.

Teaching Kids Photography
In February, 1900, the first Kodak Brownie camera was introduced to the country and photography became a past time that was made fun for America's children. They were specifically marketed towards children and could be purchased for $1.00. It was a sturdy little black camera that was very easy to operate. When they bought a Brownie, the child was able to join the Brownie Camera club and enter photo contests for prizes.
Today, cameras can be a bit more sophisticated, however, so can our children. They're using computers at the age of three and four. So, to introduce a 7 or 8 year old to the serious world of photography is very reasonable. You could begin by using an inexpensive point and shoot camera, rather than a high-end digital camera with all the bells and whistles. There'll be plenty of time to graduate to the more complicated cameras once you've taught the child the basic operation and handling and they've demonstrated a serious desire learn photography.
The first lesson needs to be interesting and fun. If you get bogged down in mechanics, the child may become bored and lose interest quickly. Make it exciting. Get them their own fanny pack, teach them how to set it up with their camera and accessories, and take them out to a place where they can experiment with their new camera on subjects they find interesting. For example, if they like animals, find a park with a lake that has wildlife.
Start with the basics, don't overwhelm the child with too many details. Have him hold the camera and identify the major buttons necessary to take a picture. Explain how to turn the camera on and how to insert the memory disk. Then show him how to use the viewfinder. This would be a good time to teach the child how to add interest to their photograph by shooting the subject off center. Allow him to experiment, guiding him to get some quality shots and enjoying the process.
Once you've finished the session, take the time to download those very important first pictures to your computer and print them. The goal for most child photography is to capture the blissfulness and innocence of youth, to take the child's pure character and freeze it in time. This allows parents to preserve these wonderful traits forever.
The problem is that professional formal photography does not usually capture the true character of the child. Usually the child is posed in an artificial setting and told to look at a point just to the side of the camera and say cheese.

Photography Tip #1. Think About The Light. You are probably aware of the principle that the best light for a landscape photo occurs early in the morning and late in the afternoon. This is true most of the time. Your first decision, on reaching your location, should be this: will the light for this subject be early or late in the day?
This depends on several things. If you are facing East and you want the sun shining on the subject, you should take your photos close to sunset, when the sun is shining from the West. On the other hand, if you want a silhouette, with the sun behind the subject, you should aim for sunrise. If you have the opportunity to stay overnight, you should take it. By being there both early and late in the day, you will often find opportunities you had not expected. For example, you may think your subject is best at sunset, only to find that the following sunrise presents unexpected benefits, like dew on the ground or even wildlife.
